Who's Who in the Bible- Part 2: Unsung Heroes and Lesser Known People of Scripture
We unpack the boy with the loaves and fish and the widow with two copper coins to ask what generosity looks like when resources feel small. We sit with Hur in Exodus—holding up Moses’ arms—and talk about the power of second-chair leaders who make ministry work without seeking a stage. We revisit King Josiah, the eight-year-old who grew up to lead a national return to God by rediscovering Scripture, and we honor Shiphrah and Puah, midwives who feared God more than Pharaoh and protected life at great risk. Each story drives home a single refrain: availability beats ability. When we bring what we have—time, talent, courage, or a simple yes—God multiplies it.

Welcome to Rush Hour. We're back for another episode today. Myself and Britney and Ashley, we're here to give you Rush Church updates, talk about upcoming events, talk about life, talk about turkeys, whatever else comes up in conversation, and then we'll continue on with our Who's Who in the Bible series today, and we're looking at the lesser known people of the Bible. So we're going to give some examples of things that people that we think are lesser known that you might not have heard of or you might have forgotten about. So that's going to be what we're talking about today. And I guess I'll just throw it over to one of you guys and see what you want to talk about first.
SPEAKER_01:Actually, I think you should go first.
SPEAKER_00:Why do I have to go first? Because Friendsgiving is Friendsgiving is the next thing on the list, and that has to do with me and the youth ministry. So I will go first. Friendsgiving is Sunday night. If you're listening to this before it happens, make sure you spread the word. It's a big event for our student ministry. It's November 16th from 4 to 7, Sunday night. And we invite all the youth groups from around the county. And we have just invited people to come hang out with us. And we play games and fellowship together. Everybody brings food to share. We have a huge meal, and then we have some time of worship with our Rush Church praise team providing the worship aspect for us. And then we'll have a small devotional. And last year we did this, it was really good, a really good time. And so we're going to do it again this year. And if you can make it, if you want to, you can just show up. Even if you're not a teenager or a student, you can just come see what it's all about. Come hang out, worship with us for a little bit. But that's November 16th, a Sunday night, four to seven. That's Friendsgiving.
SPEAKER_01:I love Friendsgiving.
SPEAKER_00:You're not even going to be there this evening.
SPEAKER_01:I know, but it's my favorite. I know I said that last time, but it really is my favorite. Okay. I think the worship. Did I say it last time? I can't remember.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. We should just do more worship nights in general.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah. That'd be fun. My dream is one day to do like a worship evening on New Year's Eve. Going into New Year's Day. That would be amazing. Like we end the year with worship and we start the year with worship.
SPEAKER_00:So we'd have to be together for New Year's Eve? We would. Oh. Okay. So it could be worse, I guess.
SPEAKER_03:That is.
SPEAKER_00:Can we have fireworks?
SPEAKER_03:You know, Wes Ramsey loves to put up fireworks. You're right. He does. He does. I'd be sure he can rig something else. An epic show. Anyway.
SPEAKER_01:That'd be so much fun.
SPEAKER_00:Let's not.
SPEAKER_01:Let's let's circle back to that. Circle back. We'll come back to that.
SPEAKER_00:We can talk more about that closer to the new year. I don't know why I said it like that. That was weird. What else is coming up besides Friendsgiving?
SPEAKER_03:Well, Thanksgiving dinner first.
SPEAKER_00:Are you sad about dinner?
SPEAKER_01:No, I like Thanksgiving, but I was excited for Women's Day.
SPEAKER_00:It's still happening. You know that, right? Yeah, I know. Okay. Thanksgiving dinner is what day is that? Sunday the 24th?
SPEAKER_03:Sunday the 24th, yes. And we're actually working on a promo video for that right now.
SPEAKER_00:Yes, we are.
SPEAKER_03:We are.
SPEAKER_00:You're gonna love it. We can't even talk about it.
SPEAKER_01:You might love it, or you might go, okay, these guys have way too much time on the lost and we're going broke.
SPEAKER_03:We have inflatable turkey costumes.
SPEAKER_00:Yes, we do.
SPEAKER_03:One day I think we were just sitting around. Cody, we were we were in our office. Oh no, no, no. Like, Cody, Cody, it was your idea.
SPEAKER_00:It was not my idea. I had nothing to do with this except I supported it for.
SPEAKER_03:Okay, I was sitting in my office on my own. Cody was outside, and I said, Cody, we need turkey costumes. And he says, Yes.
SPEAKER_00:Anytime I'm all for it. Inflatable things, you know, costumes.
SPEAKER_01:I've never been in an inflatable until today.
unknown:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:You look great.
SPEAKER_01:Ever. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Panic there for a minute.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, it was very don't zip it up before you turn the fan on and then have that person walk away.
unknown:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:They're getting really hot.
SPEAKER_01:Like I need blow up etiquette.
SPEAKER_00:You do. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_03:So yeah, we're coming up with a fun, cute video for that just to make people excited about Thanksgiving.
SPEAKER_00:Don't forget about the turkey.
SPEAKER_03:So if you happen to spot one of us in a turkey costume, or maybe even a different costume, tell us where you found us. And and I might have a gift for you. If you gotta tell us first where you spotted us.
SPEAKER_00:We will be you never know. Who knows where we'll be?
SPEAKER_03:Where we might be in a turkey costume.
SPEAKER_00:And John's a big fan of the turkey costumes too. So I'm excited. Did you just hit your head on the wall?
SPEAKER_01:Yes, she did. I know. I was like, nobody can see that, but she definitely does hit her head.
SPEAKER_00:If you heard her say, ouch, it's because she hit her head on the wall. But she's okay. Knocking us. Well, we have Thanksgiving stuff coming up. We got turkey costumes.
SPEAKER_01:Five o'clock service. Five o'clock dinner.
SPEAKER_03:Five o'clock dinner is full. It's full. I found that out, yes. So no more five o'clock seats.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, fill up real fast. We got some seven o'clock seats left if you'd like a late dinner. Oh, but you can come beforehand and hang out in the sanctuary.
SPEAKER_03:My husband and I are doing a game show.
SPEAKER_00:You're doing a game show? Yes.
SPEAKER_03:The price is right.
SPEAKER_00:No way.
SPEAKER_03:Seriously?
SPEAKER_01:I'm so excited. Bob Parker. I just Levi asked me the other day. He's like, which one are we eating at? I was like, well, we'll be there the whole time. Remember? Because we go have fun in between.
SPEAKER_03:Right. That's so much fun. That's the best thing ever. It is. And I'm also, well, yeah, I won't talk about that yet. But I'm working on something, another project for that night, too.
SPEAKER_01:More than the prices right?
SPEAKER_03:Yep. I just can't not be busy.
SPEAKER_00:Are you breaking out the Plinko board?
SPEAKER_03:Oh. Yes, yes, we are.
SPEAKER_00:I didn't think we were before now, but now she just realized we have a official price is right Plinko board that we have.
SPEAKER_01:I forgot about that. So did I.
SPEAKER_00:So you don't want to miss Thanksgiving dinner night. There's no youth group that night, if for those of you that have teenagers or anything like that. But we cancel Rush Life so we can all be together for Thanksgiving dinner, five and seven. Not five anymore. If you have your five o'clock tickets, it's good. But if you didn't, then you have to come to seven o'clock now. But make sure to come early because the price is right going on in between, apparently. So yeah.
SPEAKER_03:And then the women's tea. Now we have the women's tea today. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_01:Women's tea.
SPEAKER_03:Go ahead, Brittany. Why do you like the women's tea?
SPEAKER_01:Well, you can just show up or you can sign up and host a table. Well, we want you to sign up, but I mean you can just come and join a table. Or you can host your own table. And I just think it's really fun. I mean, everything looks so pretty and it's so nice, and Cody's gonna wait on us with a bow tie. Are you doing that?
SPEAKER_03:And it's over.
SPEAKER_00:If I'm allowed to.
SPEAKER_03:Well, we already announced it. I think we make the rules. You already and I kind of invented this, so come to the women's tea and I'll uh serve.
SPEAKER_01:Wait, is Erica going?
SPEAKER_00:I think so.
SPEAKER_01:Because that'd be funny if she was like busy and you're like, I'm going to the women's tea, and she's like, What?
SPEAKER_00:Sorry, I have a women's tea to go to, dear. Good luck with the kids and I'm going to Oh, but we have child care. Yeah, I know. Eden was listening to the last podcast we did, and she heard you say the kids have their own tea party, and so she was like, I'm going again. And I was like, I don't oh, okay. Also from Lost Last Podcast, we talked about fruit in the garden, and we talked about apples and dragon fruits and kiwi. But we were listening to in the car, and my nine-year-old Timmy, he was like, I asked him beforehand before we listened to him, I was like, Tim, do you ever think about what the fruit was that Adam and Eve ate in the garden? And he was like, I don't know. Who would who would ask that question? And I was like, Well, I thought it might be some kind of like fruit that we don't have anymore, just like a special fruit that we don't have today. And he's like, You're right. Like a plango. And I was like, a what? He was like, Yeah, pomango. Pomango. It's a peach and a mango put together. And I was like, That sounds delicious.
SPEAKER_04:That sounds great.
SPEAKER_00:But he didn't even, it was just instant. He was like, Yeah, pomango. I was like, Yeah, okay.
SPEAKER_01:No, I'm gonna have to go home and ask my kids.
SPEAKER_00:So, don't know what they come up with, but like if you can make a fruit that doesn't exist, Timmy would have a pomango.
SPEAKER_03:Interesting.
SPEAKER_00:I just wanted to mention the repetition.
SPEAKER_03:Yes, it's a pear and an apple. It was the crisp of an apple, but the taste of a pear. Oh.
SPEAKER_00:Whoa.
SPEAKER_03:Best fruit I've ever had. Wow. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:That's interesting. I like honey crisp apples, but there you go.
SPEAKER_01:I don't really like to bite into an apple.
SPEAKER_00:I used to be like that.
SPEAKER_01:Like my hurts your teeth? Yeah. My teeth are kind of sensitive.
SPEAKER_00:Like I didn't like the all the skin of the apple right at first. And so I used to just like get an apple and then like cut a chunk out of it. Start at the chunk that I cut out of. Anyway. Anyway. Women's tea is Dancing Turkeys.
SPEAKER_03:When is the women's tea? December 4th. Yes. Thursday, December 4th, 6 30.
SPEAKER_00:6 30 on a Thursday?
SPEAKER_03:Yep.
SPEAKER_01:Everyone's going to be there.
SPEAKER_03:Yes. Except for We already have 12 tables.
SPEAKER_00:No husbands and no cards. Exactly. Correct. Except for me.
SPEAKER_03:Women's tea.
SPEAKER_00:Wes will sing and I'll walk around in the circle.
SPEAKER_03:Wes will be there.
SPEAKER_00:I need to get like an official butler outfit or something.
SPEAKER_03:You do.
SPEAKER_00:With tails and a top hat. Don't need a top hat. Are you sure? Maybe a monocle and a cane. Oh no, we're getting real too fancy. I'm not like your hands. I'm the butler.
SPEAKER_03:Yes, you are going to need your hands. Okay. Just a towel over your arm.
SPEAKER_00:Anyway. I like this. This is going to be good.
SPEAKER_01:Key for the queen.
SPEAKER_00:Okay. Maybe I won't be there.
SPEAKER_01:I promise you I'll be like. Snap your fingers at me.
SPEAKER_00:Wait her. Over here.
SPEAKER_02:Reef, please.
SPEAKER_00:I'll be gladly. It'll just that's what I'll do. It'll be fun.
SPEAKER_02:You'll have to, because everybody's going to be able to do that.
SPEAKER_00:Any way to get into the tea and see what's going on.
SPEAKER_02:This is it, Cody. This is the way.
SPEAKER_00:I don't have to look through the windows.
SPEAKER_02:You don't play an instrument. You don't sing. So this is the way.
SPEAKER_00:You got no talents whatsoever to be there. You just walk around and give people food. Beautiful. I like it. This episode's already off the rails. But I like it. I like it. This is fun.
SPEAKER_01:Reel it back in, I'm sure.
SPEAKER_00:What do we have any other announcements?
SPEAKER_03:Um you want to recap this weekend?
SPEAKER_00:I was going to do that next if we don't have anything else to add to announcement time.
SPEAKER_01:I don't think so.
SPEAKER_03:Okay. Turkeys, tea, Friendsgiving.
SPEAKER_00:Yes. Alright. There you go. Oh, the weekend. It was a good weekend. Yeah, it was good. What'd you guys do? What was happening? Talk about it.
SPEAKER_01:Well, we want to talk about church. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03:I don't even remember what I did in my personal life. Church was so exciting. I can't remember.
SPEAKER_00:I know what I did on Saturday. I did nothing. When Saturday. Because it was the first Saturday in a long time. We had nothing on my calendar. So I was like.
SPEAKER_03:You literally did nothing.
SPEAKER_00:I didn't do anything. I did stuff around the house, but I didn't go anywhere.
SPEAKER_03:Oh, I was at a college. That's right.
SPEAKER_00:Did you take a class?
SPEAKER_03:No. It was family weekend.
SPEAKER_04:What was the class?
SPEAKER_03:No, it was family weekend at Grace College. Yeah. So my husband and I got to see, and and Carter all got to see Hannah for the weekend. We got to walk around, see her recording studio and all of her worship stuff. And she's legit. Like I'm like, man. I was like, okay, we need that. We need that. We need that.
SPEAKER_00:Taking out all the cool equipment they have. Fancy.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah. But yeah, that's cool.
SPEAKER_00:Uh, we're still here at Calvary with our podcast, we're using their podcast room. But next year, we're probably gonna start putting together our own podcast studio, recording studio at Rush Church. So that's exciting. Then when you want to be a guest on the show, you can come and hang out at the church with us. Yeah. Maybe we'll give you a turkey blow up a costume too.
SPEAKER_03:You too can have fun with us.
SPEAKER_00:You too can gobble gobble down the hallway. All right.
SPEAKER_04:Thank you.
SPEAKER_03:But yeah, okay, so back to church.
SPEAKER_01:So John's sermon was like, it was just, I mean, we already had yeah, first it started with two baptisms.
SPEAKER_03:Right. First we had Thane and Amber baptized, which is amazing. It's amazing because it's it was a husband and a wife. So like they both decided, you know, as a family that this is what they wanted to do. And for the husband, you know, to be like, you know, because he's God has called the husbands to be head of the household. But for him to take charge and be like, you know, this is this is what I'm doing, this is what we're doing. It's just it's incredible. I mean, it's I just it gives me chills.
SPEAKER_01:I know that when Levi and I got baptized together, we wanted it to be private. Like I was like, I don't want all the people there. Like I just want my family and I want to be alone. I kind of regret that now. I mean, I don't regret it because it was great. And I love that my family. But I think that we think in our head, like, oh, we can't go up in front of everyone. Like that would be too uncomfortable. That had to be amazing.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:To just have that many. Because you couldn't find a seat in first service. If you're gonna check out Rush Church, second service is oh my sweet.
SPEAKER_03:We have lots of room at 11 o'clock service.
SPEAKER_00:Everybody likes the early service. I know.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, but yeah. But then, but then his sermon, like he just kept talking about how you know, we're not guaranteed tomorrow. You know, we could we could die today. I could die going outside right now. But I mean, luckily I know where I'm going, I've accepted Jesus. But like he, you know, basically in a sermon, he just he was just saying, Don't wait. Today is the day, do not wait. And literally, somebody was listening to the second service, put the dogs away, put her flip-flops on, and drove straight to the church. Listening to it from their house. I'm yeah, listening from their house and said, I want to get baptized. It was so cool. It was yes. I mean, I feel I don't think there's a dry eye in that.
SPEAKER_01:No, it was really awesome. It was really awesome.
SPEAKER_03:So I'm proud of her. If you're listening, I'm very proud of you.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, we had a great Sunday. It was just, I don't know, about everything was baptized or baptisms and new people, saw some new faces, new families, and I got a new deacon. He's a cool guy.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Brittany's husband Levi was ordained as a deacon for the church, which is uh a cool thing that he's really just grown and you know took on this new challenge, I guess, this new role. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:That was really, really awesome.
SPEAKER_00:Um we had all the leadership elders and deacons all up on stage and prayed for him and kind of just affirmed that, which was pretty cool. It was a big day. It was.
SPEAKER_01:Everybody was like, Oh, how was the rest of Levi's day? And like as soon as he came out, because I'm serving breakfast, I was like, you know, everybody's like, Levi, thank you. Like, this is so great. And I was like, I love you. The trash is overflowing. Katrina's like, honey, my car broke down. He's like, Okay, he's at it. So it was just funny that that is awesome. He couldn't even like enjoy it.
SPEAKER_00:Or from going from the stage to being like, I'm gonna be a deacon, I want to serve in this place and help these people, and then to come off stage and immediately just get right to work. Just like I'll help here, I'll help this person. And so I think that's kind of a cool Russ was with them. There's a lot of people that make things happen at Rush Church that kind of just you don't see, you get overlooked a little bit or you just don't know about.
SPEAKER_04:Right.
SPEAKER_00:And so there's some of those kind of the people in the Bible also where you don't really remember that they're there, or you know, lesser known unsung heroes. That was a good segment, wasn't it?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, that was good. You reeled it right back in.
SPEAKER_00:Oh man. Uh that's what we're gonna talk about today, some characters in scripture. But before we get there, anything else from you know what you guys wanted to talk about? Anything, bring up anything?
SPEAKER_01:No, there's a lot of things we could bring up. We could bring up trying on the turkey costumes and we did that already. I know we already brought that up. I tell you what. Watch the recordings when we post them. It'll be fun.
SPEAKER_00:Wow. We do we have silly times, we have fun times, we got serious times too. We had a Bible study this morning, we learned a lot about Deuteronomy, Deuteronomy. What is that? Keep going in a remax. What? Keep going in a remix. Wow. Yeah, that one book after numbers. So we've had a good day so far. Let's just jump in. We'll talk about some Bible stuff now, some people in the Bible. So last week we talked about some failures, how we looked at some of our favorite Bible characters, and how they even the ones closest to God sometimes mess up, sometimes make mistakes, and that they can be redeemed and God still uses them. Today I want to talk a little bit about some characters maybe that we forget about or maybe you never heard of, or you kind of remember them but don't remember really what they did or what they were all about. A look into our favorite people from scripture. Some you may have overlooked. We will look at biblical characters and their strengths, flaws, and stories that we can apply to our lives today. I just read that off the paper that Brittany printed off for us. Thanks, Brittany.
SPEAKER_01:She makes Brittany keeps using Britney, Brittany keeps us organized.
SPEAKER_00:She gives us outlines and stuff of what we're talking about.
SPEAKER_01:Otherwise, we would never stay on track.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. Thanks, Brittany.
SPEAKER_01:You're welcome.
SPEAKER_00:That is the best. So let's just start with I don't know. Ashley, do you want to start with your unknown person or the person that you thought maybe people forgot about or don't know a lot about?
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, so my person I want to talk about came comes from out of John. Uh that's John chapter six, where Jesus is feeding the thousand, the five thousand, sorry, with the loaves and the fish. And so, you know, we hear about how much, you know, the the disciples were there, and they're like, How are we gonna feed this to feed this many people? Jesus already knew what he was gonna do. But like, they were like, Man, it would take like a year's, a half a year's worth of salary just to buy enough bread to feed half, you know, all these people. But there's a little boy. The little boy to me is the unsung hero because he had his lunch with him and he just gave it all to Jesus, not knowing exactly what Jesus was gonna do to it, but he gave everything he had to him and let Jesus perform that miracle. So to me, that unsung hero right there, that action of you know, that that that excuse me, that God can take small offerings and use them to do something miraculous. It's not the availability matters, it's more than the actual ability to do it. So the little boy was available with his lunch to give to Jesus, and the the the ability that Jesus had to multiply that to feed the five thousand, you know, obviously was the miracle there. But yeah, to me, the little boy was the unsung hero in that story.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. I was like the feeding of the five thousand. It'd be cool to like I just pictured in my head like Jesus out with all these people, and they're kind of like on the outskirts of a town, they're kind of like in the middle of nowhere. I guess you could say like WrestleVania, something like that. And there's like nowhere, they're all out there, and then we don't have a one-stop, there's no McDonald's, and so we need, and the disciples are like, We need to feed these people. They're getting hangry, you know. You want them to keep listening to you, they need some food. And so, and and don't find any except for the little boy. Right. And you give what you can. So God can take the little that we have and multiply it to accomplish something huge. And it could be anything. It could be your talent, it could be something that's really good at, it could be money, it could be resources. If you have that, it could be your time, it could be all kinds of things that you think don't think that you have anything to give, but you do. God's giving you something, and maybe you haven't discovered it yet, but I think you know whatever you whatever you do have to give, don't be afraid that it's not enough, because God can take even the smallest amount and do something pretty miraculous with it, as we saw in the story. What do you think, Brittany?
SPEAKER_01:Well that uh yeah, I think that kind of leads into my favorite, which is the widow who gave her two what's it called? Widow's widow's coins? Is it like actually called out?
SPEAKER_00:Uh it's called something.
SPEAKER_01:The parable of the Yeah, like Jesus is at the temple and he's preaching and teaching, and they're watching people put money into the into the box, putting what they have. And some are giving a lot, some are giving less, but then a widow comes by and she puts in these two small coins.
SPEAKER_00:Yep, two small copper coins.
SPEAKER_01:Two small copper coins. And Jesus says to everyone I tell you, she is giving this woman is giving the most out of everyone.
SPEAKER_00:And copper coins were the least. They're like pennies for us. And you're like, that lady just gave two copper coins and that was it.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah. But Jesus says Yeah, that that that she was giving the most because she was giving all that she had and trusting that God was gonna do it. Mark twelve.
SPEAKER_00:Mark twelve, forty-three through forty-four, Jesus says, Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all the other people here. For all those others have given a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she had to live on.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:That's the point. She's like, she gave all of it. Other people gave more than she did, but compared to what they have in what they gave.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:You know. So I think that kind of plays into what we just talked about, the little boy and this lady. And they this th this this idea of giving what you have comes up in scripture a few places. So it's not like God doesn't God's not concerned about the amount of you know, what you give, or or it's all all about relatives of your motive and offering what you can.
SPEAKER_01:I definitely have been reminded of that in prayer over the years a lot because I've found myself praying before, like, God, if I could have this, then I would give this. And he's like, hold up. You should already be giving what you have. Because I know this doesn't come with unsung heroes. This is the my favorite part of the podcast where I say a random verse and then Cody has to figure out where it is in the Bible.
SPEAKER_00:Oh, is this a little game that we play here or something? Let's see if we can stump the pastor.
SPEAKER_01:Like when Jesus always tells us parables about I gave you ten coins and you multiplied it double. And I gave this one five and he multiplied it, and then the other guy buries it. Yeah. And it's like, I don't want to give it because I didn't want to lose it.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:And I feel like it all goes in that where give what you have. Don't don't wait.
SPEAKER_00:Don't don't waste what you have either. Don't waste and like don't be afraid that it's not gonna be enough. Don't be afraid of it messing something up. The guy that buried his money, like he didn't lose it, but he also didn't get anything from it. You didn't let sit there. He could have invested it and got a little bit back at least, instead he just buried it away. And so I think the idea of giving what you can, actually being willing to give it all and and just see what God does. You might think, This is this is just a nickel, or these are just two pennies like the lady that, but Jesus saw that and he's like, It's the heart behind it. You gave everything. And so what do you be a talent, your time? Maybe you need to step up and serve in a place or give more of your time to God in different areas. Maybe you're really good at something. Maybe you're really good at I don't know. You have a talent.
SPEAKER_01:Well, yeah, people with talents would know what to say when Cody remember is talentless than anything other than serving. Cody knows how to know how to be the teenagers. I'm so sorry. That is a joke. I'm just giving Cody hard.
SPEAKER_00:You can't sing. What are you gonna do with the tea?
SPEAKER_01:The the people listening didn't just jump in there like, oh, rude.
SPEAKER_03:Right. But but that but the servanthood is is a great thing because not everybody you might not physically be able to give monetary. Right. You know, if you literally, I mean, every penny goes to bills and what you know, just for living and feed your family, that doesn't mean that you can't give to God or give to your church. You can by serving. You can by stepping in and teaching a Sunday school class or helping out in the nursery, or you know, helping by taking out the trash, you know, during breakfast or whatever. Like there are other ways to give to Jesus, even if you can't monetarily.
SPEAKER_01:Agreed.
SPEAKER_00:Yep. We've got things we can do. Some of us have different talents. You can do this, do that. Some of us are encouragers. That's what the Bible says. Some people are encouragers. And so that brings me to my next person that I always like to think of when I talk about like friendship or just relations with other people, or I'm teaching, and I go to this short little story often when I think about encouraging other people and being there for other people. And this is the story of a guy named Her, H-U-R. He's from the Old Testament, and this little story is in Exodus 17. So there's there's this battle happening. This is during the time of Moses. During the battle against the Amalekites, Moses stood up on a hill to pray. And it the story tells us that when he lifted, God said, if you keep your staff lifted up in the air and your hands up like this, then the Israelites will win the battle. And so Moses would hold his staff up and hold his hands up like this, and the whole time he did, you know, Israel had the advantage, and God moved through there and and they were defeating the Amalekites. But when his arms got tired, and his, you know, you would stand there like this with your arms above your head for a while, eventually you're going to get tired. And so he'd his arms got tired and he would drop him, and then the Amalekites would start to win the battle. So what happened was a guy named Aaron, that was Moses' brother, and then another guy named Her, H-U-R, sat him down and then held up his arms for him until sunset, ensuring Israel's victory. So this really goes to show that you can't do it all on your own. No matter how great Moses was, he still needed some help in some different areas. And see that the most critical roles aren't always those in the spotlight. That's what I take from this little story. You know, you see people on stage at Rush Church, you see people preaching or teaching in specific roles, and it's kind of like a public role, like people see you doing things, but they wouldn't be able to do those things if they didn't have people behind them, behind the scenes, setting things up, doing things, helping them out, talking them through things. And so, so some of the most important roles, I think, in the Christian life are not always in the spotlight, but they're behind the scenes support for all the essential stuff that we do. And so I tell people you gotta have a her in your life that'll be there and hold you up when you get tired, or hold you up when you can't you think I can't lift my arms up anymore. I can't keep can't keep going down this path, and you gotta have people around you like these guys, and then and so I like the story of this, and always it's a pretty cool scene. Moses on standing up like this with his hands up, and then he drops him and he gets tired, and her and Aaron are there to lift him up, to support him. He wouldn't be able to do it alone. So I just kind of like that story. Have you ever been in a spot where you were glad somebody was there to lift you up or support you?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, most definitely.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:I think that a lot of things that I know that Aaron's talked about a lot, but if you are just coming into scripture, I also feel like you learned so much about Aaron and how much he supported Moses. Like they both did. Yeah. I know her is a smaller blip, if you will.
SPEAKER_00:That's true.
SPEAKER_01:Is her Miriam's husband?
SPEAKER_00:I don't know.
SPEAKER_01:I don't know either.
SPEAKER_00:Not sure about that.
SPEAKER_01:Um, I was looking up some stuff online and that was one of the theories that I read, and I just wondered if I was.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. And this is one of them. And the other time, when Moses prepared to go up to Mount Sinai to receive the law from God, he entered the people, entrusted the people to Aaron and her once again. So, you know, Aaron is talked about a lot, but her not so much, but he's just as important. I think he's one of the highest ranking leaders behind Moses and Aaron to lead the people. And so he says we see her lifting up Moses there, and then Moses tells Aaron and her to watch the people while he goes up on the mountain. Didn't turn out too well that one time. The golden cow thing. But we don't talk about that. We should. Her is identified as the grandfather of Bazal. Bazel Bazalel. Anyway, some guy with a B. The master craftsman chosen by God and filled with the Holy Spirit to design and construct the tabernacle and the Ark of the Covenant. So her's family goes on to do some cool things. Design the tabernacle and design the Ark of the Covenant. So just like goes to show. This guy's mentioned three times in scripture, but he has a big impact on different different things and different things.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, it's a really cool story.
SPEAKER_00:Yep. So that's one of the guys I want to talk about. Let's see. Pick another one on the list.
SPEAKER_01:I'm like, let's talk about your King Josiah.
SPEAKER_00:Oh, yeah. I really like King Josiah. He's in Second Kings and also in Second Chronicles, because Chronicles is just a retelling of things, but Josiah became
SPEAKER_01:Well I already know.
SPEAKER_00:Oh.
SPEAKER_01:I already ran ahead.
SPEAKER_00:Look at you preparing, knowing what to talk about. How old was he? He was eight. Eight years old, the boy king, the boy king who led Judah's last great spiritual revival. So Josiah became king when he was eight. And then when he got to be eighteen years old and really start to take over the kingship as a you know an adult, the book of the law was rediscovered in the temple. It had been lost and neglected for generations. So God's people, the Israelites, had, you know, lost the first five books of the Old Testament, as what is known as the law. And they're like, oh. How do you lose that? Just misplaced that. Yeah, where was it?
SPEAKER_01:But I don't understand that part of the story, just like I heard.
SPEAKER_00:I would have to dig into that a little bit more. I'm not prepared to talk about that off the top of my head. But when Josiah, when Josiah heard the words being read from the law, from the from God's word that had been neglected and forgotten about for years and years and years, he hears it. And he tore his clothes in repentance and led the nation back to God, basically. He destroyed all forms of idol worship and purged the land of the worship of other gods and paganism and all that good stuff. So it is a very big turning point. This is one of the last good kings that Israel has. And it was Josiah, and he was eight years old when he became king, and then he really turned things around for Israel for a little while, as much as you can in the Old Testament, because God's people get turned around again and again, and they always go back to their old ways.
SPEAKER_04:But he seems to get annoyed about the Israelites in the Old Testament.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. It's a lot. King Josiah's one of my favorite people in the Old Testament that no one really talks about a whole lot. Like have you guys heard of King Josiah before if we did this podcast?
SPEAKER_03:No, I don't remember it. No. Never.
SPEAKER_00:The boy king became king at a young age. That's what yeah. But anyway.
SPEAKER_01:I'm wondering if my eight-year-old could be king.
SPEAKER_00:She could probably he was king in name, but I don't think he really took over the kingly he had people around him. He probably did. He listened. Well it says, you know, he had wise counsel around him. He listened to his advisors and did what they said. But then when he became older, they rediscovered this. Some guy was like, Oh, what's this? Dusted it off. It's like, oh wait. And then they read it and he's like, We haven't been doing this for a long time. And the people were like, and and Josiah led the revival, I guess you call it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03:When it says that he tore his clothes, people are always doing that.
SPEAKER_00:I like, do you think people nowadays are always people in scripture?
SPEAKER_01:It's always like they tore their clothes.
SPEAKER_00:It's a sign of remorse, it's a sign of grief. It was just what you did. It's just what you did. Okay. Because I'm I'm a theatrical person, so I'm I'm just thinking like all of this tearing off because he was just fall to your knees, tear your clothes, throw ash in your face.
SPEAKER_01:Couldn't have been easy to do.
SPEAKER_03:No. To tear your clothes. I mean, because those clothes back then were made out of really good fabric.
SPEAKER_00:Right. Well, I mean, we say we say this, like tear your clothes, like I tore my clothes off and jumped in the pool. Like we just took them off. Like we didn't like rip.
SPEAKER_03:He didn't like rip it in half.
SPEAKER_00:I don't know. I'm just saying it. We we have these sayings like that. Maybe it's just insane of like he tore his clothes off. Or he tore them and I don't know. That's besides the point. The point behind it.
SPEAKER_01:I don't think anybody's supposed to ask this question. I read this with my mind.
SPEAKER_00:I like the question. It's a good question. Like, why are they always tearing their clothes off in the Bible?
SPEAKER_01:Like I think it's because they only had like two outfits. They were like one to make sure that you knew they were tearing.
SPEAKER_03:So there's a guy, and he was sitting there, and he got so mad, he just tore his clothes off.
SPEAKER_00:It's not mad. It's greed. Sorry, it's greed. It's remorse. It's like, how can we not have been doing this the whole time? It's like sorrow, kind of like kind of like that. But cool story. If you don't know King Josiah, go read it. It's in Second Kings. And it also shows age is irrelevant to spiritual devotion. One's person's one person's commitment to God's word can spark a transformation in a whole group of people.
SPEAKER_01:So now that reminds me of Jesus. Like being in the temple and talking to the leaders when he was young. He was like twelve or thirteen.
SPEAKER_00:Oh, well, when his parents lost him.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, when his parents lost him, and he's like, where's my kid?
SPEAKER_00:Where's Jesus? He's not here. You don't have him. You don't have him. Where did he left Jesus?
SPEAKER_02:Heaven's not here.
SPEAKER_04:Heaven's not here.
SPEAKER_00:Mary's Mary's like, Jesus! And so they had to go back, they had to go back and find him, and where is he at? He's 12 years old and he's in the temple and he's teaching people, and they're all like, Wow.
SPEAKER_01:Wow, how does this kid know so much? Like that's what they're thinking. So it was the same.
SPEAKER_00:I like the stories of young people in the Bible. Jeremiah, he was like 17-ish when God called him to be a prophet, and he was like, I don't know if I can do that, you know?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:And then a few other stories. Mary was pretty young.
SPEAKER_01:Right. Yeah, they were all pretty young. The disciples were pretty young. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Some people say.
SPEAKER_01:Is that debated?
SPEAKER_00:That's debated.
SPEAKER_01:Okay.
SPEAKER_00:I lean on the side of disciples being pretty young, but other people will disagree.
SPEAKER_03:But that's just I love it when you teach our youth and the and you're like, How old do you think they were? And then their minds are blown. Like that they're their their age. Like they can, you know, they have the power to do this stuff.
SPEAKER_01:So some might have been young, some might have been older.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. I don't think any of them were older than Jesus and he was 30. So it wouldn't that's this culture in times of following a rabbi around, you wouldn't be older than the guy that's teaching you and stuff like that. But that's a I there's a theory that you can go look at and see how old the disciples were. Some people say they're older, some people there's credible people that say they were pretty young, especially John. Some people say John was one of the youngest, sixteen-ish, maybe. So go do the research for yourself on that one if you're interested in that topic. But yeah, age, God uses all kinds of different people in the Bible, despite age, despite what they think about themselves. So yeah, Josiah was a young king and turned the whole nation around. So pretty interesting. Let's go to talk about Shipra and Pua.
SPEAKER_01:Yes. Let's talk about them.
SPEAKER_00:Let's talk about them. What do you think about them?
SPEAKER_01:I think they're very brave women. Are you gonna tell the story first? Or do you have do you want me to tell the story?
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, yes, Brittany.
SPEAKER_01:Okay, guys.
SPEAKER_00:Story time.
SPEAKER_01:So Pharaoh was not a great guy.
SPEAKER_00:Where was he at?
SPEAKER_01:He was at his home.
SPEAKER_00:Okay.
SPEAKER_01:In the temple. In the palace.
SPEAKER_00:What country did he rule?
SPEAKER_01:Egypt.
SPEAKER_00:There you go.
SPEAKER_01:This story is from Exodus. This is for Moses times. There's so many stories with Moses.
SPEAKER_00:Well, he did do a lot, so he did do a lot.
SPEAKER_01:Okay, so Pharaoh was afraid of the Hebrew people. Like they're growing too many. So he's like, all right, he goes to, I'm never gonna pronounce their names right.
SPEAKER_00:I don't know what that's right.
SPEAKER_01:He goes to these two women.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, just call them the two midwives.
SPEAKER_01:And they were Hebrew. Hebrew midwives that were helping Hebrews have babies. And he was like, I need you guys to kill all the males that are birthed.
unknown:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Why are you there?
SPEAKER_01:Don't let any of the They agree to it, I think, to his face. Just to get him out of the situation.
SPEAKER_00:But then you want me to read it from the Bible?
SPEAKER_01:I guess.
SPEAKER_00:No, keep going.
SPEAKER_01:So then they agree to it to his face, but then they do not do it when it actually comes to pass. Like people have males, just show them out of there and decide not to, because they were okay with taking the consequences of doing what they thought was right versus Pharaoh killing God more than the Pharaoh. Feared God more than Pharaoh. That sounds good. I should add that to my story. Okay, Cody, fine. Read it from scripture.
SPEAKER_00:I'm just saying it's an Exodus chapter one. Brittany did a great job. I don't know if I need to read this. This is just maybe you can. The king of Egypt called the midwives and said to them, Why have you done this and let the male children live? So I picked it up right after Okay. You know, they let the male children live. And the midwives said to Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them. So God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied and grew very strong. And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families. Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, every son that is born in the Hebrews, you shall cast into the Nile, but you shall let every daughter live. So Pharaoh went to the midwives first. He's like, Do what I say. I'm Pharaoh. At this time, Pharaoh is the most powerful man in all the world. He is ruler of the biggest empire around Egypt. And so the Pharaoh comes to you and says, This is what you're going to do. And the midwives are like, Okay, we'll do that. But then they don't. And then he comes to them and is like, I thought you guys were supposed to be killing the baby boys. What are you doing? And they're like, It's not our fault. It's not our fault. And they might have exaggerated a little bit here. They might have just been like, they were really quick thinking. They were like, Well, they give birth to the babies before we get there, and we can't do anything about it. And the Pharaoh is like, Oh, fine. Well, they just tell the whole country, and then he tells all the people to do it, and so you end up having a problem. It actually happens, and that's how you get Moses in the basket down the Nile. But the yeah, the these two women, they decided that it was what? Better to serve God than to serve this earthly power, earthly king. So the Pharaoh wanted to suppress the growing Israelite population. You know, he asked them to do this, but they feared God more than they feared Pharaoh and refused to carry out the order, saving lots of lives, and God rewarded them. So this this shows really true courage in choosing to obey God no matter what the circumstance, no matter what you're faced with. I mean, disobeying a direct order from the most powerful guy in the world, the head of the biggest empire, i it could have been death on the spot for these two midwives, but and this whole story starts with them defying an earthly power and defying Pharaoh in order to please God, and it sets up the whole story of you know, we're gonna defy the powers of Egypt, and then they're gonna get called to trust on God. The Israelite people are gonna have to rely on God in the wilderness, they're gonna have to rely on him, they're gonna have to put their trust fully in him and not anybody else. So the story starts right away in Exodus 1 with these two setting up the whole Exodus story to me. They're like, we're not gonna do what this pharaoh guy says, we're gonna do what God wants us to do. And that's kind of sets up the rest of the rest of the story pretty perfectly, I think. So but their names are Shipra and Pua.
SPEAKER_01:Shipra and Pua.
SPEAKER_00:That's how I say their names.
SPEAKER_01:I mean it kind of looks right.
SPEAKER_00:S-H-I-P-H-R-A-H. Shifra. Maybe it's Shifra.
SPEAKER_03:Shifra. Shifra. Right, because P H makes the F sound. Wow. Or can. Can.
SPEAKER_00:You don't know. This is crazy.
SPEAKER_03:Well, when we were learning, when we were learning it in Bible study with John, I kept thinking Pooh. I kept thinking about like Pooh and Timone.
SPEAKER_00:It's Poomba. Oh, that's gonna go with always just a little. I thought you were gonna go with Moana because there's a pig named Poe.
SPEAKER_03:Well, that's right. That would be closer than Poa. Lion King.
SPEAKER_00:Wow. Lion King is one of the best Disney movies ever made. It is. So it's a classic.
SPEAKER_03:It's not Pua, it's Pumba.
SPEAKER_00:Pumba. Pumba. I like that. That was a good idea.
SPEAKER_01:Pua in the Bible. I'm never gonna get it. I didn't know where that was. Pua now, because now I'm gonna beat Pumba every time.
SPEAKER_00:Shefra and Pumba. Oh man, that's pretty good. Yeah, I think those are some characters. How much time do we have left here? Oh, we're pretty much out of time. So I think that'll be. We talked about some people, didn't we?
SPEAKER_03:Yeah. Some unsung heroes.
SPEAKER_00:Unsung heroes. There are plenty of people in the Bible that you probably don't even know exist. So there's lots of people on the list that, you know, and they all play a role. They all do something. And so I think we kind of see there's a place for you in God's kingdom, no matter who you are, how old you are, where you're at in life, status, all that stuff. God doesn't take that into account. He sees you for who you are, and it's his creation and what you can do for his kingdom. And not mostly what we can do, but what he can do through us, I think is the most important thing. Yeah, right. It's what he does through us.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, you just have to be available.
SPEAKER_03:You've got to be available. Yeah. Availability is more important than the ability. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Good job. Somebody probably said that before somewhere. Probably. But we'll say that you did it. I said it earlier. Actually. Yeah. You're the first person to ever say that. So we're going to put your name next to it. What was it again?
SPEAKER_03:The availability is more important than the ability.
SPEAKER_00:Awesome. Yeah. I like that because that's basically true.
SPEAKER_03:We need t-shirts.
SPEAKER_00:We don't need more t-shirts.
SPEAKER_03:Why?
SPEAKER_00:I just I don't know. You can put anything on it.
SPEAKER_03:I only have eight. It's a tagline. You know how much John loves taglines. Yes.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. He loves all of our antics and he's on board with everything that we do.
SPEAKER_03:So thank you, Pastor John.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. So what are we talking about next time on the podcast? It's gonna be worship, right? Yes. We're taking a break from the people of the Bible. We're gonna do a talk about our worship night that we had at Friendsgiving and just talk about worship in general, music-wise. And Thanksgiving. And Thanksgiving.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:And then we'll take a break for Thanksgiving. For that week, we won't do a podcast, right?
SPEAKER_01:I guess.
SPEAKER_00:I guess we could. I thought you were gone. No.
SPEAKER_01:Now you'd be back. I'll be back.
SPEAKER_00:Anyway.
SPEAKER_01:I've never been lay on the beach for a couple days.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, yeah, yeah. Me and the beach.
SPEAKER_01:I'm taking Ashley with me. I wish.
SPEAKER_00:So yeah, we hope you're enjoying the podcast. We're enjoying putting it together, having these conversations, and thanks for listening.
